Feeding to Hunger Cues

If your baby is thriving and gaining weight, you’re likely doing a fantastic job and don’t need to record every ml fed. No-one knows exactly the amount breastfed babies get every day. But keeping records can be reassuring and handy if there are issues.

Calculating Formula Intake

Determining the amount of formula consumed per feed is simpler than it sounds:

Formula in bottle before feed – Formula left in bottle after feed = Formula fed

While it looks straightforward, remember the amount of made liquid formula is slightly more than the amount of water you measure to start with because of the powder.

Using Bottle Measurements

This is the quickest and easiest way to get a quick estimation.

  • Firstly, check the amount of prepared liquid formula once made in the bottle. Note this down somewhere.
  • Secondly, check the amount of formula left over after feeding. Again, note this down.
  • Calculate the differences

Using the Feeding Guide

The amount of formula made can also be calculated but this method requires using your math skills to calculate, and products vary in the way they present information on the label so it’s a lot more complicated.

Example

Label states 1 scoop of powder = 7.5g. 1 scoop of powder added to 50mL of water makes about 55mL of formula.

This means one 7.5g scoop of powder provides ~ 5ml liquid formula.

If you use 3 scoops + 150mL of water = 165mL formula
